New City is the county seat of Rockland and the seat of the Town of Clarkstown. It stayed mostly farmland until the 1950s. Once the Tappan Zee Bridge and the Palisades Parkway opened, the farms turned into neighborhoods, and most of the houses here went up in the decades after that.
