House Painters in Nyack, NY.
Careful painting for Nyack's older houses, up the hill from the Hudson.
Nyack, NY
Painting Nyack homes.
Nyack sits on the west bank of the Hudson, on hilly ground that climbs up from the river. Many of its houses go back to the 1800s and early 1900s. Edward Hopper grew up in one of them, an 1858 house on North Broadway that is now the Edward Hopper House Art Center. Oak Hill Cemetery has been in use since 1840, and the village takes its name from the Native Americans who lived there before Europeans arrived.
Many of these are wood-frame houses with clapboard siding, porches, and a lot of trim. After a hundred years or more, they carry many layers of paint. When the wood moves under those layers through the seasons, the old paint cracks, and new paint cannot hold onto a surface that is coming apart.
Older houses carry more layers of paint, so the right prep for yours is set at the quote. Nyack was also the site of the first European settlement in what is now Rockland County, in 1675, and the Nyack Library still uses its 1903 Carnegie building.
What We Look For
Local know-how.
Wind and damp off the river
Houses that face the Hudson take wind-driven rain and damp air. Paint usually fails first at the bottom edges of the clapboards and on window sills. The right prep for a wall that faces the river is set at the quote. Sills get extra attention, because they hold standing water after every storm.
The village review board
The Village of Nyack has an Architectural Review Board that works through its Building Department. If you are planning bigger changes to the outside of your house, check with the Building Department at (845) 358-4249 before work starts.
