Suffern was settled in 1773 near the base of the Ramapo Mountains, and it sits right on the New Jersey line next to Mahwah, about 31 miles northwest of Manhattan. The old Albany Post Road was its main route in the early years. Lafayette Avenue is still the main street, and the Lafayette Theatre there opened in 1924. The Soldier's Monument stands at Washington and Lafayette avenues, and the village post office was built in the New Deal years.
The streets close to the village center have plenty of older wood-frame houses with porches and detailed trim. Newer neighborhoods spread out from there toward the hills. The two need different work, and we quote each one for what it actually needs.
